If I dont use all settlement on housing......

....will my benefits stop?
I have a settlement figure from my divorce and I intend to use it to buy a small flat.
I am relying on benefits; JSA and CTC while I look for work and am getting housing benefit at the moment. The council have said they can still pay housing benefit while I look for a home to buy, as long as I am using the 'full amount' for re-homing.
I've found a place for less than the settlement figure which will leave me between 5-8k.
The place needs a lot of work though. Am I allowed to use the left over settlement to buy new carpets and essential furniture to make the place habitable or will this affect my benefits?
Obviously I can ask the benefits people but I'd like a heads-up first if anyone can help?

I don't know, and the benefits people, as far as I can tell, are a law unto themselves, but I would have thought the sensible interpretation is that necessary works also count as 'homing'. Similarly, removal company or whatever, because: how else are you supposed to pay any of those costs associated with the move? Good luck.

I know if I use the full amount to re-home us, it will be disregarded as far as benefits are concerned. But if I get an older property for less money it does make sense to use some money to bring it up to scratch.
The DWP seem to stop your money first and ask questions later so hopefully I'll find a job soon and not have to worry!
