What are we each entitled to in our divorce settlement?

What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

How much information should I disclose when contacting clerks to try to identify a suitable barrister for my case?

They would need to be aware that expertise in a couple of unusual areas is required but I'm mindful of the possibility that the barristers could end up working for the other side.

The clerks will know which questions to ask you, but if you can provide additional information that will help the clerk with deciding which of thier barristers are best suited to help you.

Thanks. I called the clerks in the end (I'd been going to e-mail them) but they didn't want to go into too much detail at this stage. Given that a conference would be the first step, I don't understand why they were talking about hearing dates. It looks as though I'll have to discuss this with my solicitors but given that my resources are finite, I would much rather have been able to identify good candidates myself.
